Trying to Understand Twitter

I've been playing around with Twitter (@kowarski) and have to admit that I don't fully understand when/how I am supposed to use it. I linked it to my Facebook profile for a while, but have decided to separate them.

Anyone have any good insight on how/when Twitter is particularly useful? So far, I can see value when I'm at a conference or other big event - and it is kind of fun tonight to follow what other people are saying about the Jets-Patriots game.

I'd love your thoughts

    Hi Lee,

    I've been fooling around with Twitter also. I think the two examples you mention fall into the general category of "monitoring the back channel."

    Here are a few ideas I'm come across:

    1. Business/website promotion -- Suppose you have a website selling products to low carb dieters. You could tweet daily on the topic mentioning dieting tips, linking to relevant articles and low-carb recipies. Of course, every now and again you would also leave a link to your website.

    2. Drive traffic to your blog -- Tweet the headlines and provide links to the posts.

    3. "Listen" to the chatter for customer feedback -- For example, a large company might look for tweets that include the name of a new product they recently launched

    4. Use twitter as a competitive or collaborative research tool - Follow leading thinkers on a topic of interest to determine likely direction of companies in that space.

    I'm sure there are others and even more will be discovered with time.
