Simple Pleasures While Travelling
After landing in Madrid today, I had one of those moments where you go "why doesn't everyone do that?" Upon reaching baggage claim #4, we were presented with a monitor showing the exact time that bags would be available (as shown at right). Instead of waiting for 15 minutes and getting annoyed, we were able to go to the restroom, get some Euros, and be back just in time for the bags to start coming out right on time. So simple and so obvious, but I haven't seen it anywhere in the States.

I had the same feeling in Berlin recently when confronted with the escalators in the U-Bahn (metro) stations. At first I thought they were broken as they weren't running, but I decided to walk up it and as soon as I got on it kicked in and took me up a flight of stairs. Then I thought I was just special and had some sort of metaphysical connection with the machinery, but after observing the same thing happening to countless other "special" people I realized that they are set on a sensor and extremely efficient. If we're (Americans) so worried about energy efficiency, why can't we have things that work only when they need to? Or people, for that matter?
By the way, hi Lee!
